The story of my entry into ham radio in 1956 is still a "Work-in-Progress"
1956 Novice Licence as KN6SXX rig was an Viking Adventurer and BC-312-N Receiver. Antenna was a Long Wire from our home in Mount Shasta California. I was active in the MS High School Radio Klub (K6CDQ). I shortly replaced the BC-312-N with a Hallicrafters S-38D. In 1957 as K6SXX a brand-new Conditional (A ham class of license that is no longer available) I added a Heath VF-1 VFO and replaced the S-38D with a borrowed NC-173.
Graduating from High School in 1959 I upgraded to a Viking Valiant I and SX-101 Mark IIIA. The antenna was changed to be a 135' Windom fed with 75-ohm telephone line. I mostly operated in traffic nets, hosted the Mission Trail Net's annual convention in 1959. Some DXing and Contesting was attempted, however, with the antenna I had working an EU was a really big challenge - I could run JA's on 40 and up and working a single G or F station taxed the limitations of the equipment. Sweepstakes and Field Day were my favorite activities.
I was active in the Mt. Shasta Amateur Radio Club (W6BML in those days). My Elmer was Ted Graves, W6FKI. Photos and more information will be forthcoming.
In July 1960 I joined the U.S. Army. (See Army Days)
